Official '840' Tags
WHAT IS AN 840 EAR TAG AND HOW TO PURCHASE
840 tags are available as both visual tags and Electronic Identification (EID)* tags. Each 840 tag contains 15 digits and begins with the number 840 (the USA country code). The remaining 12 digits on the tag are unique to the individual animal. Depending on the size and shape of the tag, additional information may be printed on the bottom of the tag, such as an additional management number for the animal or the producer’s premises ID number. EarTagCentral.com offers only approved '840' tags for sale.
EarTagCentral.com, owned by DHIA Services, is a USDA approved AIN (Animal Identification Number) or '840' Tag Manager. These Official '840' tags/devices comply with the requirements of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) for both visual and electronic identification. NAIS is a cooperative and voluntary program between federal, state and industry officials, and provides for a standardized information system to aid state and federal animal health authorities in the event of an animal-health disease incident or outbreak.
Producers who choose to use Official '840' tags/devices should take the following steps:
- Obtain a Premise Identification Number (PIN)
- A valid PIN and premise address will be required when ordering 840 tags. The premise address and the PIN address must match in the USDA database and will be validated by both EarTagCentral.com and the manufacturer before the order is processed. Tags must be shipped to the exact premise address with few exceptions. Please provide a daytime contact number in case questions arise when validating your PIN.
- 840 tag orders usually take a few more days to process because of the extra verification level.
* EID tags are also known as RFID (radio frequency identification) tags.
